Mascot selection poll opens Monday

The mascot selection process for the University of Mississippi will begin its next phase on Monday at 8 a.m.

A poll will be available to Ole Miss students, faculty, staff, alumni association members and football season ticket holders to choose from 11 mascot ideas and provide feedback. The poll will close July 5.

The poll will narrow the selection down to between three and five ideas, which will be voted on once school resumes for the fall semester, according to Ty New, co-chairman of the committee.

No pictures will be made available in the poll because the committee doesn’t want people to get caught up in what the idea looks like.

The ideas will have accompanying stories that provide the voter a description of the idea and how it relates to Ole Miss or Mississippi, New said.

New also said there will be a mass email and text message sent to students when the poll begins and on the last day to ensurre they are aware of the deadline to vote.

Those eligible to vote will visit mascot.olemiss.edu. Voters must select their status related to the University, and from there, the site will transfer them to the designated voting

area.

There is currently an active Facebook group as part of reminding students to vote. For more information, visit mascot.olemiss.edu.

Ole Miss deserves something creative, intelligent and fun for a mascot. My suggestion is the Fightin' Faulkners. This celebrates the importance of Oxford and the University to the literary world PLUS the mascot would still be a small man with a mustache! Faulkner was appropriately feisty for transformation into a mascot. Furthermore, football games are full of sound and fury (signifying nothing to some, but much to others) and always end with bang or a whimper (depending on the Ole Miss score). Where can I most effectively make this suggestion?

What an amazing coincidence that the voting dates fall right in between summer semester dates when the students likely aren’t on campus! I’m sure that was just "overlooked".

The sights and sounds of Ole Miss have nothing to do with the social beliefs of the ignorant or uneducated. The sights and sounds of Ole Miss were NOT conceived out of negative social behavior – you are an educational establishment - do you really think you are going to change people's beliefs just by changing a mascot. Educate man's heart and soul – that is what will help.

This is a joke...and so is this obtuse process..."no pictures because the committee doesn't want to get caught up with what in what the idea looks like"....are you kidding me? Surely, those with common sense can see through this.

Here's another thought: If Col. Reb is so bad, then why aren't the powers-to-be releasing the rights on the image of Col. Reb? I mean, receiving money from such a negative icon; sounds like, well.... hypocrisy.
