First taste of fall: Seasonal sweet treats to try in Oxford

Students share their favorite fall flavors as cafes add fall items to their menus.

The first days of fall are quickly approaching. As the leaves start to change colors, students are craving their favorite fall flavors. Here is a look at some seasonal items added to menus around Oxford.

The Magnolia Coffee Co. truck on the University of Mississippi campus introduced its Touchdown Chai, a pumpkin pie-flavored chai latte, perfect for students craving warm spices and a slight caffeine kick.

Mackenzie Williams, a sophomore finance major from Holly Springs, N.C., enjoys supporting the local business when getting her pumpkin spice fix.

“My favorite fall drink is a pumpkin chai or pumpkin spice latte,” Williams said. “If it’s from a local coffee shop, I’ll do that over Starbucks.”

Starbucks, which is known for its famous pumpkin spice lattes, also has several non-PSL seasonal menu additions, including an iced hazelnut oatmilk shaken espresso and a pumpkin cream cheese muffin.

Simone Corral, a sophomore journalism major from Santa Barbara, Calif., is proudly pro-pumpkin spice.

“My favorite fall flavor is either pumpkin chai or white mocha,” Corra said. “I usually like to get a white mocha with pumpkin cold foam.”

Lacey Rust, a junior in her first year of pharmacy school from Montgomery, Ala., offered a dissenting voice when it came to pumpkin spice.

“My favorite fall flavor is maple,” Rust said. “One million percent, pumpkin spice is overrated.”

Maple is an often-forgotten fall flavor. Community Donuts on University Avenue offers maple-flavored donuts and apple fritters.

In the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union, students can try McAlister’s Deli’s neon-green Witch’s Brew lemonade, a caramel- and green apple-flavored beverage, and the pumpkin pecan cookie with white chocolate.

Late summer through early fall is prime apple season, with peak harvesting in September and October. Maddie Dalton, a junior history major from Kennett, Mo., enjoys autumnal apple desserts.

“My favorite fall flavor is apple,” Dalton said. “I love apple pie.”

Jamie Gurner, a senior allied health major from Water Valley, Miss., is not as interested in fruit desserts.

“My favorite fall flavor is cinnamon,” Gurner said. “My favorite cinnamon dessert is monkey bread.”

While not a seasonal item, Bottletree Bakery on the Square does offer monkey bread. The bakery plans to add several fall items to its menu later this fall.

Keep an eye out for more menu additions on and off campus as we near sweater weather.
