The University of Mississippi has placed the Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta on interim suspension after a video of an alleged hazing incident surfaced on social media.
The Inter Fraternity Council defines hazing as the following:
“As defined by policy DSA.SC.200.035 within The University of Mississippi M-Book, any action taken or situation created, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate, that causes embarrassment, harassment, ridicule or risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team shall constitute hazing.”
According to Jacob Batte, director of news and media relations for UM, the university was first made aware of a video on Tuesday, Sep. 3.
The Daily Mississippian received confirmation from Batte on Thursday afternoon that UM’s chapter of Phi Delta Theta has been placed on interim suspension.
“The university is aware of the video and takes allegations of hazing seriously,” Batte said. “The university has placed the Mississippi Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta on interim suspension, which includes pausing new member activities. This should not impact the activities of other organizations on campus.”
The Daily Mississippian has reached out to Phi Delta Theta and Inter Fraternity Council for comment and is awaiting a response.
This is a developing story.
