The Associated Study Body unanimously passed a senate proclamation recognizing first responders and sanitation workers on duty for the Ole Miss vs LSU football game and elected two new senators at its formal senate meeting in Lamar Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
SP 26-3 is a proclamation that recognizes the first responders that were on duty during the historic game on Sept. 19. It also acknowledges the sanitation workers who helped clean up the campus following the game.
The proclamation was presented by Paul Winfield and Hunter Duncan. Winfield talked about how the proclamation was written with first responders in mind, thanking the Oxford Fire Department and Oxford and University Police Departments.
Duncan said it is important to build a good relationship with those organizations and applauded them for their service during the game.
“The overall purpose of this bill is to strengthen our relationship with those communities and organizations so we can further partner with them in the future,” Duncan said. “We all saw how the Grove looked after the LSU game, and they got that fixed up real quick, too. I think we just need to express our gratitude.”
The proclamation was passed unanimously.

ASB also voted to fill two open senate seats. Luke Wilburn and Lynnzee Stapleton were elected out of nine total candidates.
Wilburn is a freshman public policy leadership major from Hernando, Miss. Wilburn said he ran because he wanted to tackle problems he has encountered in the university’s housing policies.
He raised the issue that under the current rules, if two roommates sign a roommate agreement and just one of them does not hold true to the agreement, both of the students could be kicked out of their room.
“I want to advocate for stronger enforcement policies that hold the perpetrator of these accountable, rather than punishing those who are simply trying to live in peace,” Wilburn said.
Stapleton is a sophomore public health and rhetoric writing double major from Jackson, Miss. She said that when talking to students from whom she attained petition signatures, she realized many students were not aware that the university has a student government.
“I propose a weekly ‘What’s Happening’ section in the ForUM highlighting opportunities and resources, alongside a ‘meet representatives’ initiative introducing senators, their responsibilities and how students can reach them,” Stapleton said.
