The Daily Mississippian offers University of Mississippi student writers a fair platform for sharing a diverse range of views on contemporary issues.
Opinion article topics must have relevance to the University of Mississippi students, faculty and/or staff. They may address university policies, student life or state, local and national issues that affect University of Mississippi students.
Articles must present a clear, concise thesis –– not just describe an issue — and must be supported by strong evidence and reasoning.
These must be supported by credible sources, quantifiable data or personal experience. Hyperlinks to and citations of support material are requested. The work of writers advocating for political, social or educational groups of which they are members may be rejected at the discretion of editors, if they decide the article is not a fair representation of an issue.
The tone and style of the submissions must be civil, fair and professional. Hate speech, discriminatory remarks, ad hominem attacks and inflammatory jargon will not be accepted.
The Daily Mississippian staff reserves the right to edit submissions in accordance with Associated Press and DM style and grammatical guidelines. If the editorial team members have questions or propose changes that might alter the meaning of the work, they will consult with the writer before publication. Editors will also fact-check submissions.
Work must be original and exclusive to The Daily Mississippian. Length of submissions should not exceed 1,000 words.
Opinion articles should be submitted in Word or Google Document form to thedmopinion@gmail.com. Expect acknowledgment of receipt of the submission within seven days and a decision on whether the article will be published in The Daily Mississippian or on thedmonline.com within 14 days.
Include your full name, academic year and program of study. Also include contact information including university email address and personal telephone number.
