NCAA approves new two minute warning and coach-to-player helmet communication

The NCAA announced that they will be making additions to college football regulations, calling for implementation of a two minute warning and the helmet communication system — both of which are already in the NFL.

The helmet comm system will work identically to the way it works in the NFL. One player per side of the ball may be able to communicate with the sideline, and will be signified by a green dot. This could potentially take the fiery Ole Miss Rebels offense and quick play-calling to another level.

Prior to implementing helmet communication, the players would all have to look at the sideline to know what play to run. Now, quarterback Jaxson Dart can instantly relay the play to his team. This should also allow Head Coach Lane Kiffin to become even more creative with his game plans.

Defensive Coordinator Pete Golding can now also be more precise with what he wants in the defensive play by speaking to the defender with the green dot, which is often a linebacker.

Alongside helmet communication, a two minute warning will also be in place next season. Both teams will be notified by the referees of a two minute warning at the end of the second and fourth quarters.

At the two minute mark in these quarters, there will be a referee timeout. This saves timeouts for teams and allows them more time to come up with a solid strategy for the final two minutes.
