The Ole Miss Men’s Basketball team looked to close out their regular season with a win against Texas A&M. Despite a heroic 21-point effort from guard Jaylen Murray, the Rebels were defeated 86-60 on Saturday, March 9, in Oxford. It was a sad end to the season on Senior Day.
First half:
The Rebels could not get anything going offense-wise at the start of the match, going without a single basket for the first four minutes of the game. Finally, five minutes in, guard Matthew Murrell hit a three-pointer that gave the Rebels their first points of the day.
Overall, the team looked sluggish, leading to a big deficit early in the game. They continuously turned the ball over, which effectively killed any momentum for Ole Miss. Outside of a solid half performance from Murrell, things looked bleak for the Rebels.
The Rebels went into halftime down 13 points with an overall score of 42-29.
Second half:
Unfortunately, many of the Rebels’ issues in the first half went from bad to worse in the second. In addition to even more turnovers from Ole Miss, the Aggies were on fire from beyond the arc and punished the Rebels harshly for every mistake.
The lead stayed insurmountably large for most of the second half, as nearly all of the Rebels’ efforts were thwarted. Although the Rebels played hard and refused to give up, it was far too little and far too late.
The game ended with the Aggies winning 86-60, and Ole Miss suffered their fifth loss in their last six matches.
Weird thing of the game:
Some fans may have noticed that starting center Moussa Cisse was not wearing the number 33 on his back. His jersey ripped, and guard Robert Cowherd gave him his jersey to wear.
