After a week of tension in Oxford, a group of around 30 pro-Confederate protesters organized in the Square and began marching to campus in support of the university’s Confederate monument just after 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Campus and city police had an increased presence in the area around the protesters, and S.W.A.T teams stood by.
Counter-protesters gathered across the street from where the the neo-Confederate groups positioned themselves on the steps of the Lafayette County Courthouse. The groups yelled at one another as a crowd of onlookers formed along the sidewalks on the Square.
