Potential Homecoming and Personality election candidates were required to attend the certification meeting held on Sept. 24 in the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union in order to launch their campaigns. Elections are organized by the Associated Student Body.
Public campaigning, including tabling on the Union Plaza and meeting with Greek chapters, begins Monday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. Standard campaigning using social media, GroupMe and word of mouth began when the certification meeting ended.
This year, students will have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming Homecoming elections through the ForUM instead of myOleMiss. The positions up for election include class maids, campus favorites, Homecoming King and Queen and Mr. and Miss Ole Miss.
In the upcoming weeks, candidates will promote their platforms and campaign along the Union Plaza with stickers and slogans in hopes of securing student votes. Each candidate’s platform is different, and will support a cause of their choice.
ASB Attorney General Lucy Allen explained the changes being made this year with the aim of making the election process as smooth as possible. In addition to change in voting platform, the changes include a mandatory break day and candidate panel for Homecoming Queen, King, Mr. and Miss Ole Miss on Wednesday, Sept. 30 and a later announcement time for election results (8 p.m. on Oct. 6 instead of 7:30 p.m.). All candidates were given the rules and regulations that they must abide by at the certification meeting.
Candidates have a strict set of rules to follow during this process. Any forms of bribery, incentivizing or coercion will result in a candidate’s immediate disqualification.
In the event of a violation, the candidate will have a mandatory meeting with the attorney general and her council.
