Ole Miss announced Friday morning that Keith Carter will have his interim tag removed and become the permanent vice chancellor of intercollegiate athletics.
Carter received unanimous recommendation from the search committee, which was formed in late October and chaired by Ole Miss alumnus Mike Glenn.
Members of the committee included David Dellucci, Peggie Gillom-Granderson, Jesse Mitchell, David Morris, Ron Rychlak and Wesley Walls, along with Archie Manning serving as an advisor.
Glenn said the committee along with the search firm Collegiate Sports Associates narrowed down a list of 30 candidates that included sitting athletics directors from other programs and went through screening interviews before quickly agreeing on Carter for the position.
“This search was committed to finding the right leader who possesses the integrity and character needed to lead Ole Miss Athletics, a strong and proven record of success and excellent management and interpersonal skills,” Ole Mis Chancellor Glenn Boyce said in a statement. “We were looking for someone who wants to be at Ole Miss, and who believes all of our programs can compete and win at every level. Keith Carter is absolutely the best person to lead Ole Miss Athletics to a new era of success.”
Carter served as Ole Miss deputy A.D. for Development and Resources Acquisition before taking over as interim athletics director in May when Ross Bjork left Ole Miss to take the same position at Texas A&M.
“I want to thank Chancellor Boyce for his trust in me to lead this great athletics program forward. In my time as a student athlete and an administrator,” Carter said. “I have experienced championship heights at Ole Miss, and I will work to provide the leadership and resources necessary for our teams to compete at that level year in and year out.”
Since taking over at Ole Miss with the interim tag, Carter has approved alcohol sales at sporting events on campus and added a student party section to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. He also elected to not roll over long-time baseball coach Mike Bianco’s contract after a Super Regional loss. Ole Miss also announced plans for a new $2 million Track and Field/Cross Country facility under his leadership.
