The Rebels came out on top this past Saturday with a 52-13 win against Georgia Southern. Here are three key takeaways from the match.
Ole Miss defense
Ole Miss went into week four aiming to reduce penalties and minimize errors. However, holding calls and players taking off opposing players helmets seemed to be the most recurring flags for the Rebels.
Despite these challenges, the defense proved to be impressive, as they allowed only one touchdown and two field goals from Georgia Southern — the first of the Rebels’ season.
Two firsts
Georgia Southern captured the first touchdown of Ole Miss’ season on a halfback pass. Three penalties assisted the Eagles’ 10 play, 75-yard scoring drive. Georgia Southern wide receiver
Derwin Burgess Jr. made the first touchdown by an opposing team in the last 13 quarters. In addition to allowing a touchdown to slip through this game, quarterback Jaxson Dart also threw his first interception of the season.
Jaxson Dart and Tre Harris’ chemistry
The chemistry between Dart and Tre Harris III remained strong, particularly in the second quarter when Harris caught a pass from Dart and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Dart’s precision helped Ole Miss execute two touchdown drives in under 60 seconds.
Dart and Harris showcased their skills on the field, with Harris recording 225 receiving yards.
“He’s the best receiver in the country, so anytime you get a one-on-one opportunity with him or time to give him a chance to go make a play I do it,” Dart said in an interview with SEC Network.
With an 83% pass rate against the Eagles, Dart continued to prove to Rebel fans that he is still a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy.
Whether or not that remains true will be determined by the SEC schedule starting next weekend as the team plays Kentucky in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28.
