Ole Miss sports fans are accustomed to soaring highs and crushing lows. Depending on what program you are invested in, the Rebels inconsistently serve up a range of exhilarating victories and devastating defeats, tournament and bowl victories alternating with more disappointing seasons. However, as volatile as Ole Miss Athletics has been, as of late, most of the programs have settled into a state of consistency where the expectation is to win.
Now more than ever, Ole Miss fans are optimistic about the future of Ole Miss Athletics. The football team just secured a 10-win regular season capped off by a victory over Penn State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. The women’s basketball team has appeared in three consecutive NCAA Division I tournaments. The men’s basketball team rebounded to a 20-win season in 2024. And despite recent disappointments, the baseball team is only two seasons removed from the magical national championship victory in 2022.
So, where do the fans see our beloved teams in the next five years?
Football
From an improbable win over LSU in the regular season to a statement win over Penn State in the Peach Bowl, the 2023 Ole Miss Football team served up one of the most electrifying seasons in recent memory, and the team seems poised to build on that success.
Westin Boyd, a sophomore banking and finance major, has a hopeful but realistic expectation for the future of Rebel football.
“I think the program will continue to be one of the better teams in the SEC, probably winning around 8-10 games every year,” Boyd said. “I do see them winning at least one playoff game in the new (12-team) format, but we will probably be around the middle or bottom of the playoff teams.”
When asked about the future of Head Coach Lane Kiffin in the program, Boyd was confident.
“Kiffin will still be around. I think that we will always keep paying him as long as we are decent, so I don’t see him going anywhere,” Boyd said.
Alex McDill, a sophomore general business major, also feels upbeat about the team.
“Football is really looking good. I think they can dominate these next few years if they stay on top of recruiting and manage to keep Kiffin at the end of it all,” McDill said.
Baseball
Rebel baseball, led by Head Coach Mike Bianco since 2000, is the most polarizing major program in Ole Miss Athletics. Boasting a national championship in 2022 but following that achievement with an embarrassing losing season, the Diamond Rebels is one of the more inconsistent programs at Ole Miss.
Ann Marie Kittrell, a sophomore general business major, remembers watching the team during its national championship season.
“It’s easy to forget that our national championship run came at the tail end of what some were calling a semi-disappointing season,” Kitrrell said. “It was just about getting hot at the right time, so who knows if they can manage to do that over the next five years?”
Boyd does think changes may be coming to the coaching staff.
“I do think that the program is going to continue to be (average), and if that is the case, I think the only major change we can expect will be a new coaching staff,” Boyd said.
Men’s and women’s basketball
With the conclusion of the Rebels’ hoops seasons still fresh on their minds, many students have strong opinions on what is to come for both basketball programs.
“I sort of see both teams staying near the level they are currently at,” Kittrell said. “I do think the men will continue to make some strides and maybe even make the (NCAA) tournament, but I think the women will continue to have more postseason success compared to the guys.”
Both Boyd and McDill shared a lot more enthusiasm for the men’s team’s future.
“They’ll probably be a lot more of a contender in five years,” Boyd said. “I see them making March Madness pretty consistently, probably not winning the tournament, but definitely making it and competing in it.”
McDill predicts much of the same.
“I think the men’s program is going to be relevant in SEC basketball going forward in a much bigger way than they ever have in the past,” McDill said.
Will these expectations be met? Will Ole Miss fall short? Many Ole Miss fans hope and believe the future is bright.
