The Ole Miss soccer team traveled to Athens this Sunday after their thrilling victory over Florida only to fall 2-1 against the Bulldogs.
In their last matchup of the 2017 season, the Bulldogs left Oxford with a 4-1 loss to the Rebels, but the Rebels have not won in Athens since 2013 and this year was no different. Georgia holds a record of 5-3-2 in the last ten matchups since 2007.
During the first 45 minutes, on either side of the scoreboard, no ball was found at the back of the net. Despite the Rebels controlling the pace and cutting it close to securing a lead, both squads entered halftime scoreless.
Starting off the second half, neither defense was willing to budge.
In the 55th minute, Gabby Little kicked a beautiful ball to Channing Foster, who was making the perfect run into the box. Foster then made a cut back and passed a square ball to Haleigh Stackpole, whose shot finally found the net past Georgia’s Emory Wegener.
Sixteen minutes later, the Bulldogs’ response would turn the lead over, scoring two goals within one minute to secure the game.
The first Bulldog goal came in the 71st minute after junior Reagan Glisson’s gleaming shot was too much for Ashley Orkus to stop. The second came only 66 seconds later after Sydney Michalak was called for a foul and gave Dani Murguia the penalty that took the Bulldogs’ lead.
With only 20 ticks left on the clock, the Rebels’ attempts to equalize fell short and therefore resulted in the team’s second SEC loss of the season.
The loss brings the Ole Miss record to 8-4-2 with a 2-2-2 mark in the conference. The Rebs are back home this Thursday against Alabama (8-4-2). The match is set to kick off at 6 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
