Former Journey lead singer stops in Oxford

Steve Augeri, former lead singer of rock n’ roll band Journey, will take the stage at the
Gertrude C. Ford Center on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

This performance aims to be an evening filled with the high-energy rock anthems that have defined Augeri’s career during his time as a lead vocalist for Journey from 1998 to 2006.

Fans attending the concert can look forward to a dynamic setlist that features not only Journey classics like “Don’t Stop Believin” but also showcases some of Augeri’s solo work, including songs from his albums “Southern Exposure” and “Retribution.”

Augeri’s powerful voice played an instrumental role in reviving Journey’s classic sound and introducing the band’s beloved hits to a new generation.

Under Augeri’s leadership, the band released “Arrival” (2001), an album that was well-received by both critics and fans, further cementing his role as a key figure in Journey’s legacy.

For some students, Augeri’s appearance invokes a sense of nostalgia.

“I think a lot of us are at that age where our parents grew up listening to that legendary classical rock, and it’s been something that we’ve been able to bond over,” junior mechanical engineering major Clay King said. “So him coming to Oxford, at least for me, is a big deal because it was a large part of my childhood.”

Computer science graduate student AJ Heskett spoke about why he finds Journey’s music appealing.

“Journey is interesting because they are almost the gateway between the Eagles style of ’70s rock and the harsher ’80s rock,” Heskett said. “It’s really cool that Augeri is still actively touring.”

King echoed these sentiments.

“I know I’ll be there jumping up and down, and I don’t think I’ll be alone,” King said. “I think it’ll be a very happy, healthy and hardy welcome from us Ole Miss Rebels.”

Tickets to Augeri’s live performance can be purchased on the Ford Center’s website.
