USA Today named the University of Mississippi the No. 1 college for sports fans.

The ranking highlights Ole Miss’ unique game day atmosphere, engaged fan and alumni bases and excellence across multiple sports and seasons.
“I would say that’s a pretty ambitious statement, because you have so many colleges around the country,” senior international studies and Japanese double major Jay Allen said. “But there’s a reason they’re saying it.”
USA Today provided many reasons why Ole Miss won the No. 1 spot. The first is the Rebels’ consistent competitiveness in football, basketball, baseball and track and field.
“No matter the sport, our fans have proven they will create one of the most unique and powerful home-field advantages in college athletics. … We are incredibly proud and blessed to have the best fans in the nation,” Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Keith Carter said.
USA Today also mentions that Ole Miss was one of the original member schools of the Southeastern Conference, which the USA Today calls “one of the most competitive and popular college football conferences in the country.”
“I think it’s interesting,” junior creative writing and French double major Gabriel Navarro said. “It’s kind of crazy, but I can see where they’re coming from.”
Of course, the Grove also contributed to Ole Miss’s ranking. USA Today called it “The Holy Grail of Tailgating.”
“Oxford … ensures a quintessential college town experience,” reads the article. This comes as no surprise, given how Ole Miss and Oxford have graced many other USA Today lists in the past, such as fourth Best Public Square (2025), Best Small College Town (2024), second Best Small Town Food and Cultural Scenes (2018) and Most Beautiful Campus (2016).
It does not hurt to have a great football team either.
“I could kind of understand it mainly because of our football team,” senior linguistics major Jay Patterson said. “I think so far, at least for the semester, we’ve been doing pretty well.”
This recognition further cements Ole Miss as one of the best places to visit. Students, parents, alumni and fans of college sports can find enjoyment in Oxford.
“This national recognition validates what we’ve always known here at Ole Miss — that we create an unmatched experience every day but especially on game days,” Chancellor Glenn Boyce said. “From our beloved Grove to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and Swayze Field, the entire Oxford community comes together to create incredible memories for Rebel fans and visitors.”
