Oxford has some of the best coffee shops in Mississippi. They are popular gathering places and study spots for locals and students alike. Each cafe is unique, with its own ambience, drink selection and price range. Here is a look at the roasteries and shops Oxford has to offer.
Heartbreak Coffee
This coffee shop might be one of the most well-known study and hangout spaces in Oxford. Located on the Square, the cafe has become an Oxford staple thanks to its cozy atmosphere, in-house roasted beans and commitment to quality.
“I really like the atmosphere,” Emma Wilbourne, a senior psychology major from Memphis, said. “I would say whether you’re trying to chat with friends, or do some homework, or have some time to read, or be creative, I feel like it’s very versatile.”
Heartbreak Coffee has a wide selection of pastries baked fresh in-house. Drinks range from $3.50 to $8, while baked goods range from $2.50 to $6.75.
Common Ground Coffee Bar & Bakery
Located in the rapidly developing Sisk Avenue area, Common Ground has a modern and spacious atmosphere with large windows and plenty of comfortable seating. The menu includes a variety of options, from breakfast burritos to tiramisu. The shop also offers unique, non-coffee drinks, like “Loaded Sips” — its take on the popular loaded tea.
Drinks range from $3.25 to $8.25, and baked goods range from $4 to $10.
High Point Coffee
Here, coffee is hand roasted in small batches to ensure customers get the freshest cup possible. Located on Old Taylor Road, the shop is a popular spot for students, as it has a quieter, more secluded atmosphere perfect for studying. The shop also has an outdoor seating area for customers to enjoy fresh air, plus a drive-thru for those in a rush who are craving a caffeine buzz.
Drinks range from $3 to $6.50, and baked goods range from $2.90 to $7.60.
Circle and Square
This venue, true to its name, is located a half mile from the Circle and a half mile from the Square. Most people know it as a brewery and social space, but from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., it serves a variety of coffee options. There are lots of tables for groups to gather or to spread out study materials solo.
“At the beginning of the fall semester, campus is just so busy,” Anna Claire Carter, a junior Southern studies major and Circle and Square frequenter, said. “I often find myself needing a third space to come and do work and get out of the house.”
Circle and Square’s coffees range in price from $3 to $4.75. The shop also has a small breakfast menu for when you need a bite to eat, with prices ranging from $4 to $7.
Lost Dog Coffee
Tucked away in the Taylor, Miss., neighborhood of Plein Air, Lost Dog is a staple for coffee lovers in Oxford and Taylor. Only a 15-minute drive from the University of Mississippi campus, Lost Dog’s interior has a welcoming feel, with plush couches, vintage rugs and an assortment of tables for studying or catching up with friends.
Drinks range in price from $2.75 to $6.75. Pastries are $3.50. The shop also offers small bites from local baker Katie Topberry, otherwise known as Mrs. Hippie’s baked goods, which range in price from $5.25 to $7.
Velvet Ditch Coffee Roasters
One of the newest coffee shops in Oxford, Velvet Ditch opened in 2025 and has enjoyed much success. Velvet Ditch started as a coffee roasting company, so its dedication to the craft runs deep. The business transformed a 1940s house into a charming cafe, which adds to its homelike vibe.
Drinks range from $3.25 to $8. The breakfast and lunch menu offers food ranging in price from $4 to $14.50.
Exploradora Coffee
Exploradora Coffee is a family-owned specialty coffee roastery and tasting room established in 2020. It sources coffee beans exclusively from woman-led farms and cooperatives. The shop is roomy and eclectic, providing a soothing space to gather with friends or work on assignments.
