Given the abundance of students living off-campus, the University of Mississippi opened a new branch of Student Health Services in the South Oxford Center on South Lamar Boulevard last month as a more accessible option for students. The facility features more available parking and does not require a drive to campus.
“The main goal is accessibility for our students,” Director of University Health Services Alex Langhart said.
The SOC provides the same services as the on-campus clinic and expands care with a dedicated women’s health department staffing a specialist on site.
“Some of the services we provide include annual wellness visits, cervical cancer screenings, breast examinations … pregnancy testing and referrals for pregnancy care and infertility treatment,” nurse practitioner Felicia Daniel said.
The center also stressed the importance of accessibility and accommodation for all students, with measures in place to ensure students can afford their services.
“We never want there to be a financial barrier to carry here,” Langhart said, explaining how the center has adopted the same affordable cost as the on-campus location.
Aside from a one-time $10 fee on the first provider visit per semester, both locations offer “a university medical expense fund … that will actually cover your health services at (Student Health Services) if you’re not able to,” Langhart said.
The University Health Services Medical Expense Fund was created from a gift from the Family Leadership Council, covering urgent care, immunizations, lab work and radiology for all UM students at University Health Services facilities, up to a maximum of $500 per semester.
To accommodate transportation needs, Oxford-University Transit offers a stop at the SOC on the Gold route.
